A radioactive isotope of radium, radium-226 is a known human carcinogen with a particular impact on internal organs and the stomach. It cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted in drinking water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enforces a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 5 pCi/L for radium-226 and radium-228 combined.
